Hard to believe 2025 will be our 34th year having a sale. There
have been lots of changes made since we had the first sale in
Douglas. It is great to see the advancements our program has made
over the years; however, the real reward is seeing our customers
herds continue to improve and dominate in these western markets.
With these absolutely insane markets we have seen in the last few
years it has been fun to watch friends, and fellow producers reap
big benefits for their cattle they have worked generations to
build.
Although 2024 brought us strong cattle markets and new and
improved economic hope with a new administration, it also had
several challenges. Seems Wyoming went from one of its wettest
years in history to one of its driest in the snap of a finger.
Like many producers we spent the summer chasing water sources and
grass. We were very fortunate to not have to deal with more
drastic challenges such as fires like many of our neighbors around
the region did. But, as always Mother Nature came through just in
the right times with a small shower or cool down and give us a
little reprieve.
Over the years the Reyes and Russell families have worked together
to offer you Angus genetics you can be proud to put in your cow
herd. We have always held a high standard of the type of bull we
would offer for sale. We remain family operations that work hard
to provide high-quality bulls for producers across the region,
bulls that can work in any environment. We will keep striving to
find the right kind of cattle to use, thus producing bulls to
benefit the commercial cattlemen.
Over the years we have always held true to the key components that
have helped us stay successful. One, hard work and diversity. Two,
a very productive and functional cow herd. Three, not following
fads and trends. Four, holding true to our standards and beliefs,
and finally, a very strong and supportive customer base. If it
wasn't for the commercial cattleman, we wouldn't be here doing
what we do.
I'd like to highlight a few facts about the MR Angus cow herd. In
2009 we started to transition from calving in January to June. We
probably had a 70 day breeding season those first few. Over the
years we have tightened that window down to a 45 day season. Last
year alone we had approximately 80% of the calves born in the
first cycle. That was
ALL NATURAL SERVICE BREEDING, NO AI, NO SYNC .
We kick out 4-10 bulls per group depending on size, which means
every calf is DNA tested for parentage. Cows go to ranches
typically in May depending on weather. Once they are at the summer
ranch they calve on their own. The crew tags and weighs calves but
as for management that cow is in charge. She better pick that calf
up and get him sucking and protected because if she comes home dry
she's down the road.
Each spring we sort the bulls into three groups based off their
phenotype as yearlings. The bulls have remained in these groups,
and we like the way it turned out. Throughout the book you will
see some real standouts, not all stacked up front. We feel to
start we have a group that will offer a lot of power and growth to
any cowherd. The next set is going to leave behind some real fancy
females, “Cow Makers” as dad calls them. Finishing up the sale
will be a younger more moderate set of bulls that have really
matured into a nice set. Overall, the bulls have good bone
structure, are good footed and have been developed with longevity
in mind. We continue to strive for quality, performance,
conformation, fertility, and easy fleshing abilities that will
work at any altitude.
Our bulls are raised and developed in a
realistic range environment . They summer at Tie
Siding, WY and are PAP tested around September by Dr. Tim Holt at
8,000'. MR Angus has been PAP testing cattle for over 40 years.
Where else in the United States can you find this depth of quality
and degree of accuracy for PAP? In this years offering 79% of the
bulls tested scored a 45 or below PAP score. When the Reyes bulls
return to Wheatland, they are on a 40 Mcal ration
that is 78% roughage, they are
not pushed like a feedlot bull . They run in
their working clothes and receive no special treatment.
Both families strive for herd quality vs. aiming focus on the
numbers that show up on a registration paper. Many producers are
focusing more and more on what the papers say. Well, we need these
cattle to go to work for us and not vice versa. I believe that
over the years the Angus industry has turned into a political
numbers game. As a result, we are seeing radically high EPDs and
cattle that cannot produce as the paper predicted. The numbers
just don't add up and production is being lost. And let's be
honest, that paper really doesn't do you the commercial cattleman
much good when it really matters.
Pounds pay, not paper. Rather, we are working to
have a herd full of cattle that have eye appeal paired with a
combination of soundness, good bone, lots of capacity, with
longevity. These characteristics make for a herd that can produce
calves that work well in a feedyard as well as females that can
perform in the pasture,
without falling out of the herd within the first few years .
Again, this year we will be donating 10% of the Lot 10 bull to the
Wyoming FFA Foundation, as well as 10% of Lot 20 bull to the
Wyoming Stock Growers Association. We strongly support both
organizations that work hard to promote and protect agriculture in
our great state.
As always, we invite you to stop by and go through the bulls
anytime. We hope you will look at the sale offering, compare, and
see all that our program is accomplishing. Thanks to all our
friends and customers who have supported us over the years. We
look forward to seeing you
